CENTENARY LEGACY
NSI was founded to provide opportunities for children and young people to actively engage in Remembrance activities during the centenary of the First World War.
Centenary Activities
From 2014-2018, NSI engaged with children and young people across the UK and abroad, holding workshops and special roadshow events for the local community to come and hear from the young people. The response to the programme was spectacular. We visited ships, hangars, universities, museums, council halls, and even Buckingham Palace for our grand finale. MPs, local community leaders, senior military and even the Prime Minister came to hear the moving work presented by our young people.
Centenary Publications
The culmination of the international competitions, which received over 11,000 entries, was our Anthology, which featured all winning work, Never Such Innocence: Children’s Responses through Poetry, Art and Song.
Stories of the First World War used poetry, illustrations and real-life stories and characters, the book explores the different stages of the war and topics such as spies, women at the front, objectors, and the animals that played their part, to provide young people with a rounded view and a new perspective on the momentous events that unfolded between 1914 and 1919.
