How our workshops support fundamental British values:

  • Democracy: Young people are encouraged to share their views, listen to others and take part in respectful discussion about issues that affect their communities and the wider world.
     

  • The rule of law: Through exploring war and conflict, participants consider themes including justice, human rights, responsibility and the consequences of actions.
     

  • Individual liberty: Creative activities give every young person the freedom and confidence to develop their own ideas, express their identity and make their voice heard.
     

  • Mutual respect: Participants encounter work and perspectives from young people around the world, learning to value different experiences and engage thoughtfully with views that may differ from their own.
     

  • Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs: Workshops create a safe space to explore diverse cultures, beliefs and perspectives, encouraging curiosity, empathy and understanding.

Why should your students take part in our workshops?

How our workshops complement the UK curriculum:

  • ​English: War poetry is a familiar fixture of GCSE English study, from Owen and Sassoon through to contemporary voices, alongside novels exploring refugee experiences and other difficult subjects.
     

  • Art & Design: our workshops offer a hands-on way to explore responding to a theme or stimulus through mixed media, echoing skills built across KS3 and GCSE modules.
     

  • History, PSHE and Citizenship: our themes of conflict, displacement and human rights give pupils a creative, personal route into subjects they may already be studying more formally.

Here are the key details:

 

  • Location - We offer in-person workshops for schools and education providers across the UK. We also organise online workshops for children and young people in other countries.
     

  • Theme - Workshops typically align with our current competition themes.
     

  • Outcome - Participants will develop creative responses that can be entered into NSI competitions.
     

  • Practitioners - Workshops are led by our talented creative practitioners, all of whom are DBS checked. 
     

  • Creative mediums - Poetry, art, songwriting, short films
     

  • Format - Each workshop is different, but all place an emphasis on respectful discussion and honest expression. Many workshops incorporate creative inspiration from the NSI Archive - thousands of poems, songs, speeches and artwork by young people around the world. 
     

  • Age range - We work with children and young people aged 9-18.
     

  • Capacity - Approximately 30 participants maximum (one class), unless otherwise agreed
     

  • Length - Workshops typically last 90 minutes, though certain mediums may require longer.
     

  • Cost - Whenever possible we endeavour to provide our workshops at little to no cost to schools. 
     

  • Accessibility - We are committed to making our workshops as accessible as possible and can adapt our sessions to the needs of participants.​

Workshops

Our creative workshops give children and young people an opportunity to reflect on challenging but important topics in a safe environment. With the guidance of our practitioners, participants develop their ideas, learn new techniques and create something they can all feel truly proud of.
